Monthly Tip
Cleaning out the lint build up inside your
dryer is very important.  The accumulation
of lint can catch fire and spread to your
home. The lint will also act as insulation
on your motor and cause premature
failure.  All dryers and there vents should
be cleaned at least once a year. Doing
this will keep your family safe and your
dryer operating.
A very common complaint I get, is that the dryer runs but will not heat.  One
possible cause for this is that the dryer overheated and the thermal fuse opened
as a safety.  The thermal fuse is not resettable and will have to be replaced.
You will also have to look for causes of the dryer overheating.  These causes
generally consist of a bad thermostat, plugged dryer vent, or plugged dryer lint
chute.  Although these are the most common causes, other factors could be to
blame, including the timer.

Heres how to check for an open thermal fuse.

1.  Unplug dryer.

2.  Disconnect dryer vent and gain access to the back of the dryer.  Shut off gas
if a valve is available behind dryer.

3.  Remove the 1/4" machine screws fastening the back panel to the dryer.
There should be 9 of them.  Give or take.

4.  Now with the back panel removed, remove the 2 wires connected to the
thermal fuse.  The thermal fuse will most likely be white.  It could be roundish or
just a flat bar shape.  You will need an ohm meter to check the resistance of the
thermal fuse.  If it is open(infinite resistance) then it has to be replaced.  If it is
closed(no resistance) then return to the
Dryers page of this site and look for
another cause of dryer failure.

5.  If the thermal fuse was open then proceed to check vent and lint chute for
obstructions.  Clean as needed.

6.  Replace thermal fuse and thermostat.

7.  Reassemble dryer and connect to vent.  Check for proper exhaust outside
with dryer running.

Congratulations!  You just saved a lot of money!
